Senior Vice President of Alexa, Tom Taylor, informed consumers that "it may surprise you" that Amazon has this desire for users to speak to or utilize Alexa less frequently. "We believe that the future of consumer technology is ambient intelligence, which uses AI to weave together devices and intelligent services," said Taylor at a Web Summit tech conference in Lisbon, quoted by CNBC. "This isn't just more connected devices. It's about adding intelligence throughout the system to make the devices better."
In place of Alexa will come Alexa Routines, which will provide AI-operated machines the opportunity to conduct specific duties around the house. Some users, for example, may order Alexa Routines to open the television or shut off Amazon devices for a period of time. The routines can be set off by specific sounds, like a crying baby, or other visual cues that "clue in" Alexa Routines to conduct certain actions.
For instance, in September, Amazon came out with Ring custom event alerts, which are utilized in order to open a garage door whenever a package comes. "With this ambient intelligence all around you, increasingly you don't have to ask Alexa to do these tasks around your house," Taylor added.
Ultimately, the technologically savvy are trying to enhance their AI assistants so that they are able to know exactly what people desire at exactly the right times. In the future, Amazon anticipates that there will be many more AI assistants that will assume various roles in individualized settings.
Although Amazon may not wish for users to speak to Alexa as frequently, there are many newer technologies, such as AI assistants, that are on the rise, in its replacement. These AI assistants will hopefully draw individual consumers in to its technologically advanced way of conducting life, and thus, create more business for Amazon as a whole.
