Apple Inc. (AAPL  ) unveiled the iPhone 15 Pro series with some crucial design and performance upgrades. One of the highlights is the new Grade 5 titanium alloy design that is also used on NASA's Mars rover Perseverance.

What Happened: The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max use the same aerospace-grade titanium alloy that NASA has used on the Mars rover Perseverance.

"iPhone 15 Pro is the first iPhone to feature an aerospace‑grade titanium design, using the same alloy that spacecraft use for missions to Mars," Apple said.

Why It's Important: Titanium is known for being an extremely durable metal, but it also has one of the best strength-to-weight ratios. This allowed Apple to not only reduce the weight of the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max but also improve the overall strength and durability.

As a result, the iPhone 15 Pro Max now weighs just 7.8 ounces compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max's 8.47 ounces.

On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro weighs 6.6 ounces, down from the iPhone 14 Pro's 7.27 ounces.

"You'll notice the difference the moment you pick one up," Apple says.

It's no easy feat, either - during the launch, Apple explained that the entire process takes up to 14 hours.
