Apple
It is one of Apple's attempts to utilize digital IDs to take the place of credit cards, cash, loyalty cards, and so on. The company revealed that it intends to come out with this feature in the states of Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio, and Puerto Rico, among other states. Owners of an iPhone 8 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later, will be able to use the new feature, according to Apple.
"We're thrilled to bring the first driver's license and state ID in Wallet to Arizona today, and provide Arizonans with an easy, secure, and private way to present their ID when traveling, through just a tap of their iPhone or Apple Watch," Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said in a press statement. "We look forward to working with many more states and the TSA to bring IDs in Wallet to users across the U.S."
The digital driver's licenses and state IDs, unlike the physical state IDs, provide unique assets to users of the Apple Wallet. The digital state IDs offer only the information that is necessary for each transaction, and users have the chance to choose whether or not they would like to release the data that is being asked for. The digital information about users' state IDs is offered via encryption so that Wallet users do not need to show their physical devices.
Adding a driver's license to the Wallet is a simple process. It involves scanning the physical card, taking a photo, and then moving the head around to verify identity. As soon as it is time to provide information to the TSA, confirmation will be given through Face ID or Touch ID. Users' photos will then be taken again in order to confirm proof of ID cards.
