After the SEC began using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for monitoring the financial industry, the Central Intelligence Agency is now set to utilize the AI feature to simplify and speed up its investigation procedures.
What Happened: The CIA is looking to build and implement its own ChatGPT-style AI bot to carry out investigations, according to a Cointelegraph report citing Bloomberg. The development comes as CIA processes are being termed as slow in their current methodology.
The tool developed by the CIA's Open-Source Enterprise unit will be rolled out very soon to all the 18 agencies of U.S. intelligence. No disclosure is made on the model from which the tool will be created or its privacy protections.
Why Does It Matter: CIA Open-Source Enterprise Unit Director Randy Nixon was appointed to his role in January 2023 to ramp up efforts in the open-source intelligence space.
Analysts at the CIA will be provided with the new AI tool for better access to open-source intelligence, like scanning through large amounts of public documents. The tool will enable users to scan through the original source of information and will include a chat feature to assist in any queries.
Other U.S. agencies like the SEC also deploy AI tools to keep track of the finance industry and look for hints of fraud and manipulation. The AI tools prove highly beneficial in market surveillance, disclosure review, exams, enforcement, and economic analysis. The U.S. military and intelligence are also looking to compete with China's rapidly developing AI capabilities.
