According to a recent Bloomberg report, crypto exchange FTX is launching a new gaming unit in order to propel token adoption within the world of gaming. This can be considered a "crypto as a service" where game publishers can come out with tokens and offer support for in-game NFTs.
"We are launching FTX Gaming because we see games as an exciting use case for crypto," an FTX spokesperson informed Bloomberg in an email statement. "There are 2 billion+ gamers in the world who have played with and collected digital items, and can now also own them."
As of January 2022, there were about 398 blockchain games in existence, which has gone up by 92% since a year ago, according to DappRadar. This particular gaming-focused team from FTX signifies the need to provide blockchain-based items into the gaming world.
Despite hesitation from game publishing companies to include NFT projects within their market, individuals such as Brett Harrison, president of FTX U.S., informed The Verge that he thinks that blockchain technology can add to gaming features even to those who are opposed to this form of gaming.
"I think the backlash is primarily out of concern that the focus on cryptocurrency will divert the efforts of game studios away from making the best game possible for the players," Brett Harrison said in an email statement to The Verge. "We believe that blockchain technology takes features of games that already exist, such as in-game avatars, skins, and rewards, and makes it possible for players to own, invest, and trade these items outside of the game. But the enjoyability of the game for all players, including those who don't wish to participate in these kind of economies, should always be the primary objective regardless of whether blockchain tech is involved."
All in all, the attempt to include NFT projects in the gaming world serves as a way to encourage cultural development as well as introduce individuals to the significance and role of NFTs in the world around us. While all may not accept it, it will still be an engaging way of helping people to see gaming in an entirely new light.
