The pizza company of Domino's (NYSE: DPZ) has recently made the decision to partner with the company of Nuro, a self-driving delivery company, in order to create an on-road pizza delivery robot. This robot will permit customers to order their food and to then have it delivered to them in this way.
Starting this week, customers who have placed prepaid orders on dominos.com in Houston, Texas can choose to have their pizza delivered by the R2 robot. The R2 is the first self-sufficient on-road delivery car that has gained approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
This particular experience of the collaboration between Domino's and Nuro sheds an entirely new light on the lengths that people will go to in order to buy their favorite food. First, certain customers who make prepaid orders on the website can choose from Domino's stores as to whether they would like to order with the R2 robot or not. Then these select customers will be provided with text alerts, which will inform them about R2's exact location.
"There is still so much for our brand to learn about the autonomous delivery space. This program will allow us to better understand how customers respond to the deliveries, how they interact with the robot and how it affects store operations. The growing demand for great-tasting pizza creates the need for more deliveries, and we look forward to seeing how autonomous delivery can work along with Domino's existing delivery experts to better support the customers' needs," stated Dennis Maloney, Domino's senior vice president and chief innovation officer, in a press release.
In utilizing this particular delivery robot, customers will be able to become more self-sufficient and to have their food delivered in more creative ways. Through the building of this delivery system, Domino's and Nuro have both created a method that will surely lure more customers in to their services.
