Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) Google is rolling out new AI-powered security features for Android devices aimed at preventing phone theft. These features, which were initially announced in May, are designed to automatically secure a device if it is stolen.
What Happened: Google's suite of AI-powered security features includes Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock.
Theft Detection Lock can identify if a phone is forcibly taken and will lock the device to prevent unauthorized access. Offline Device Lock activates if the phone remains offline for an extended period, while Remote Lock allows users to secure their phone using just their mobile number.
Mishaal Rahman, an independent Android expert, noted that these features are currently in beta testing and were first observed on a Xiaomi 14T Pro. They have been tested in Brazil since August and are expected to be available more broadly this year.
These security enhancements come as cyber threats continue to evolve, with new malware targeting Android devices to exploit payment data via NFC technology, as noted by cybersecurity firm ESET in August.
Why It Matters: The introduction of these AI-driven security features by Google comes in response to the increasing incidents of mobile phone theft.
In May, Google announced the "theft prevention lock," which utilizes AI to detect theft and lock the screen of Android smartphones. This feature is part of Google's efforts to deter criminals from accessing sensitive financial and personal data on stolen phones.
Meanwhile, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has also been enhancing its security measures. The company introduced Stolen Device Protection, which adds a layer of security to make it harder for thieves to exploit stolen iPhones.
This feature requires biometric authentication for critical actions and includes time delays for sensitive tasks.
