HBO (NASDAQ: WBA) recently renewed its prequel series for "Game of Thrones", callled "House of the Dragon," after the show garnered over 20 million views on its first episode.
In 2019, the prequel series was first introduced as a 10-episode season, and now, the success of the show is under close scrutiny, as HBO deals with many streaming wars with other platforms and works to merge with Warner Bros.
"We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one," said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president, HBO programming, in a statement. "Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV. A huge thank you [to co-creator and executive producer George R.R. Martin and co-creator and showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik] for leading us on this journey. We couldn't be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two."
Though HBO has not yet revealed precisely when "House of the Dragon" will relaunch for a third season, its first season needed 10 months of filming and a high degree of work on visual effects. This work started in January and is still happening to this day. The most realistic goal would be for the release of the show to occur by the year 2024. The series will feature celebrities like Paddy Considine, playing the role of King Viserys Targaryen, and Olivia Cooke, starring as Alicent Hightower.
Although it is still unclear as to whether or not this series' second season will be quite as successful as the first, it is nevertheless predicted to be a hit, since the series will be so similar to "Game of Thrones", which has achieved a high degree of past accomplishment. Not all television series have had the same degree of success in every season, but fans are anticipating an even more accomplished second season to come.
