The markets started in the red today and sold off all morning. Weakness was widespread, from banks to tech the volume was heavy. As the day progressed, an 8% rally in oil was able to pull the markets well off their lows. The Dow and S&P 500 finished in the green with 175 point (1.09%) and 9 point (0.50%) gains respectively. The Nasdaq 100 did finish well off the lows but was unable to get positive for the day losing 12 points (-0.28%)Shares of Gilead Sciences (GILD ) had a nice day today gaining 4.46%. The pharmaceutical giant reported quarterly earnings and revenue that beat analysts' expectations. The company stated that its beat was boosted by sales of its drugs in Japan. Gilead reported adjusted fourth-quarter earnings of $3.32 with revenue of $8.51 billion. Special note: Gilead's board has authorized an additional $12 billion in share buybacks and a 10% dividend increase for the second quarter.
Chipotle (CMG ) fell 2.93% today as the news from yesterday does a complete 180. A note from analysts suggest that the investigation into the company's recent food-safety crisis has now widened. Contrary to yesterdays news that the pending e Coli investigation was nearing an end, the chain said federal prosecutors in central California now want three years of information on food safety matters. Despite beating Wall Street expectations for the fourth quarter, Chipotle recorded its worst results as a publicly-traded company. Barclays and Credit Suisse lowered their price targets on the stock, to $450 and $475 respectively. Technical traders will note that CMG finished well off its lows today.
Lastly, Barnes & Noble (BKS ) lost nearly 10% today following reports that Amazon is interested in opening hundreds of bookstores. Amazon has already started popping up in shopping malls with kiosks, but brick-and-mortar bookshops would mark a much larger step for the online giant. Barnes & Noble is currently the largest U.S. bookstore chain, operating 640 locations across the country. The stock lost 9.39% today while making new 52 week lows and shows no sign of support anywhere.
