Meta Platforms Inc. (META  ) is considering an option to allow users to delete their Threads account without nuking their Instagram account. This was revealed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri in a post on Threads.

What Happened: According to Mosseri, while Threads users can only deactivate their accounts without it impacting their Instagram accounts as well, the company is considering the possibility of separating the two. This would allow users to delete their Threads or Instagram account without one impacting the other.

Threads is currently an extension of Instagram, and Mosseri confirmed just as much in his post.

"Threads is powered by Instagram, so right now it's just one account, but we're looking into a way to delete your Threads account separately," Mosseri said.

Why This Is Important: According to Meta's privacy policy, if you want to delete your Threads account, you will have to also delete your Instagram account.

"You may deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account," the policy says.

Threads has exploded in popularity, crossing the 50 million user mark on the first day of its launch, according to The Verge. It is also now the fastest app to hit the 1 million user mark, reaching the milestone in one hour. Threads beat ChatGPT, which took five days.

This also brought Mark Zuckerberg out of his Twitter exile - he posted for the first time in 11 years, celebrating Threads' successful launch with a meme.

While Elon Musk was initially dismissive of Threads, Twitter has reportedly threatened Meta with legal action and accused it of poaching and IP theft.
