Meta Platforms Inc.'s (META  ) Threads app has hit the milestone of 100 million users in the first five days of its launch, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Threads beat ChatGPT's record by a wide margin, which achieved the milestone in two months.

What Happened: Meta's newly-launched Threads app now has over 100 million users, according to a tracker. The text-only app, launched as a rival to Twitter, also beat ChatGPT's record to become the fastest app to cross the 1 million users mark.

On the first day of Threads' launch, Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the milestones of 2 million, 5 million, and 10 million users. It took Threads two hours, four hours, and seven hours, respectively, to cross these milestones.

Sustaining Momentum Key: While Threads has garnered a lot of attention since its launch - some of it is likely due to Elon Musk's shenanigans with Twitter.

This includes recent decisions like the one implementing drastic rate limits that made the social network inaccessible to millions of users over the weekend at the end of June.

Meta made the most of this, pushing up the launch of Threads by a day - it was initially scheduled to launch on July 6th at 10 a.m. ET, but it was instead launched on July 5th at 7 p.m. ET.

While Threads has become the fastest app to 100 million users - its five-day record will likely remain unbeaten for a long time - the challenge will now be to sustain this momentum and keep users engaged on the platform.
