Golden Globe nominations for 2020 have been announced. Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) received 34 nominations, 17 of which were for motion-picture distribution.
With the rising popularity and quality of video streaming services, as well as the growing amount of original content, perhaps it's no surprise that Netflix took the lead this season, receiving the most nominations.
The film nominated the most this year was Netflix's "Marriage Story," showing up in the following categories: Best Motion Picture, Drama ("Marriage Story"), Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama (Scarlett Johansson), Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama (Adam Driver), Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture (Laura Dern), Best Screenplay, Motion Picture (Noah Baumbach), and Best Original Score, Motion Picture (Randy Newman).
Netflix produced three of the five films nominated for Best Motion Picture, Drama: in addition to "Marriage Story," "The Two Popes" and "The Irishman." Martin Scorsese received a nod for Best Director, Motion Picture. Out of the 17 film nominations Netflix received, five of them were for "The Irishman." The others were Steven Zaillian for Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture plus Al Pacino and Joe Pesci for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.
A competitor to Netflix this season, Home Box Office, Inc. (HBO), received 15 nominations. HBO is a subsidiary of the WarnerMedia Entertainment division of Warner Media, LLC, which is owned by AT&T (NYSE: T). Despite the popularity of HBO's "Game of Thrones," its only nomination was for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series Drama. That went to Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow.
The 77th Golden Globe Awards, conducted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), will take place on January 5, 2020 in Los Angeles. Ricky Gervais will return to host for a fifth time.
