New Study Shows Artificial Intelligence Growth Puts 27% Of Jobs At High Risk Of Becoming Fully Automated

There's no denying that artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way people work. Sometimes this is a good thing, other times, not so much.

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 27% of jobs could be automated by AI in the years to come. The organization added that there's little evidence to date that AI is cutting into the job market but that this could change as the AI revolution continues to grow.

Not all jobs are at risk of being replaced by AI. As noted by OECD, high-risk jobs are those using over 25 of the 100 skills and abilities considered automatable by AI experts.

According to an OECD survey of 5,300 workers across 2,000 firms in seven member countries, 60% of employees express fear of job loss because of AI in the next decade. The survey preceded the emergence of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT. For that reason, this number could be on the low side.

Despite the prevalent concerns, two-thirds of those already working alongside AI reported that automation made their jobs less dangerous or tedious. The ultimate effect of AI on the workforce and the balance of benefits and risks will hinge on policy decisions, notes OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann.

Cormann underscores the necessity for governments to aid workers in preparing for and capitalizing on AI-induced changes. Policies such as minimum wage provisions and collective bargaining could mitigate wage pressures caused by AI, while worker rights must be prioritized by governments and regulators to counter potential AI exploitation.
