Global investors on Tuesday digested new data, policy statements, and earnings reports. In Europe, the MOEX Russia Index soared 3.23%, the British FTSE edged down 0.01%, the German DAX rose 0.94%, the French CAC climbed 1.94%, and the broad STOXX 600 index gained 1.44%. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) rose 1.07% to 31,836.74, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) climbed 2.25% to 11,199.12, and the broad S&P 500 (.INX) index rose 1.63% to 3,859.11. The small cap Russell 2000 (.RUT) climbed 2.73%, and the VIX volatility index fell 4.66%.
In the S&P 500, the biggest decliners were led by insurance brokerage firm Brown & Brown (NYSE: BRO), whose shares plunged 12.66% after it reported quarterly earnings that missed earnings and revenue estimates. The other biggest decliners were computational software firm Cadence Design Systems (NASDAQ: CDNS), down 5.55%, property and casualty insurance firm W R Berkley Corp (NYSE: WRB), down 4.80%, healthcare and pharmacy firm CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), down 2.72%, and design automation firm Synopsys (NASDAQ: SNPS), down 2.30%. The biggest gainers were led by health insurance firm Centene (NYSE: CNC), whose shares soared 10.32% after reporting earnings that beat estimates and raised its guidance. The other biggest gainers were health information technology firm Iqvia Holdings (NYSE: IQV), up 10.07%, pharmaceutical firm Charles River Laboratories (NYSE: CRL), up 9.10%, financial index firm MSCI (NYSE: MSCI), up 8.80%, and medical technology firm Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG), up 7.99%.
In the Nasdaq, shares of semiconductor firm Micron (NASDAQ: MU) slipped 0.66% and biopharmaceutical firm Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) dipped 0.51%, while electric automaker Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) jumped 8.75%, athletic apparel firm Lululemon (NASDAQ: LULU) jumped 7.71%, and cloud software firm Datadog (NASDAQ: DDOG) jumped 7.67%. Among COVID stocks, biopharmaceutical firm AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) dipped 0.71%, while biotechnology firm Inovio Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INO) jumped 9.30%. In fixed income markets, the yields on Treasury bonds were largely unchanged.
As of press time, in commodities markets, the price of international Brent crude oil futures dipped 0.17%, and US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 0.43%. The price of natural gas futures soared 10.23%. The price of gold futures rose 0.2%, silver rose 0.63%, copper slipped 0.82%, palladium fell 2.07%, wheat futures dipped 0.72%, soybean futures rose 0.85%, coffee fell 3.23%, and cotton rose 2.86%. In crypto asset markets, the price of Bitcoin (BTC) jumped 4.12%, Ether (ETH) soared 9.00%, Binance Coin (BNB) jumped 4.80%, XRP rose 1.18%, and Cardano (ADA) surged 13.61%.
