The New York Times (NYSE: NYT) is turning its popular web-based word puzzle game Wordle into a board game with the help of Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS). The game, called Wordle: The Party Game, is expected to launch later this year.
The way that the game works is that players need to predict the word that another player has written down on a piece of paper. If a player needs more rounds in order to continue predicting the written word, then he or she will gather more points for the game. Whomever has the highest amount of points will lose, and the one with the lowest amount will win.
"We're beyond thrilled to work with New York Times Games to bring our gaming worlds together and extend Wordle in new ways," stated Adam Biehl, SVP & General Manager of Hasbro Gaming, in a news release.
Though Wordle is not yet available for purchase, it can now be preordered on Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Target (NYSE: TGT), and Hasbro Pulse for $19.99. According to Wordle in an interview with TechCrunch, over two million players had been participating in the game. Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) also reported that Wordle had been mentioned in 32.2 million tweets since its inception in October 2021.
The NYT has proven to see great success from purchasing Wordle, since it has experienced millions of users who have visited the site in quarter one of 2022 alone. Wordle is currently free of charge when played online, but The New York Times still observed an increase in its gaming subscribers when it added Wordle to its mix of games among others.
At the beginning of the week, a new game was also released by Spotify (NYSE: SPOT) that was greatly inspired by Wordle, known as "Heardle." This game is similar to Wordle, since it is also a guessing game, but it relates to predicting songs or other pieces of music in order to attract more subscribers or users. It can be said that other game makers might choose to mirror Wordle in order to attract users as well as success. But in terms of the physical game itself, there have been mixed reviews in terms of how users feel about it, according to sources like The Verge.
