For anyone that has been living in the dark this past week, President Donald Trump has been called for an impeachment inquiry by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi earlier last week and the details of the scandal are still developing.
Trump started his week with an attack against former Vice President and 2020 Presidential Candidate Joe Biden, calling into question Biden's son's involvement with the Ukrainian government who had compensated him well for a secret assignment. Through a whistleblower complaint against Trump, an anonymous White House official had alleged that Trump had used his office illegally based on a phone call that unnamed White House Officials tried to bury in a secure server.
This news came at a time when Trump was busy with United Nations General Assembly engagements in New York City. With the acknowledgement of the phone call and stating that it was a "perfect" call (meaning that he did not do anything illegal), Trump took to the stage Tuesday, after publicly planning to dedicate $25 million to protecting religious sites and relics and encouraging the private sector to protect people of all faiths in the workplace, to address the global officials gathered.
Trump in his speech labored on that he wanted to limit the United States' involvement in global affairs. He urged global leaders to focus on national sovereignty and explained that the U.S. will only become involved abroad when it believes the nation has a direct stake in the outcome.
Trump drew a hard line against the government of Iran, saying that the government was squandering the nation's health and vowed to stop Iran's path toward nuclear weapons. Trump vowed that U.S. sanctions on Iran would not be lifted.
Trump also criticized China, outlining that the country has embraced an economic model dependent on massive market barrier, heavy state subsidies, currency manipulation, product dumping, and theft of intellectual property. Trump believes that China should not be able to "game the system' at others' expenses, heightening Chinese trade talk fears that the countries will not come to a mutually beneficial agreement.
Trump confirmed that he withheld military aid from Ukraine, for he wanted other European countries to help pay before the U.S. sends aid, telling reported that "My complaint has always been, and I'd withhold again and I'll continue to withhold until such time as Europe and other nations contribute to Ukraine because they're not doing it." This was a controversial move on Trump's part for the European Union has provided more than 15 billion euros ($16.5 billion) in grants and loans to Ukraine and Trump was withholding $400 million in Congress approved aid.
In the afternoon Tuesday, Pelosi issued a statement into an impeachment inquiry into Trump's "perfect phone call."
On Wednesday, the call transcripts were released to the public, outlining that Trump had in fact used his position to have the Ukrainian President reopen a closed legal matter into Biden's son. Trump continued to downplay the seriousness of the charges that were increasing against him, seeing it as a "witch hunt."
At the U.N. on Wednesday, Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzon Abe announced some details of an emerging bilateral trade deal, giving hope for future calming of trade wars.
Trump late in the week has turned to threats against his impeachment. On Thursday, Trump tweeted that the stock market will crash is he was impeached, pointing to the effect of Pelosi's statement on the markets. He tweeted: Do you think it was luck that got us to the best Stock Market and Economy in or history. It wasn't!"
The whistleblower's complaint detailed that the "perfect call" was moved by White House officials into a server that holds information that are matters of national security. It seems that officials in the White House understood that a call transcript of the President pressuring a foreign leader to open a probe related to a Democratic Candidate before the next election was not a "nothing call" and decided to cover it up.
Trump accused the whistleblower of being "close to a spy" and threatened that spies were dealt with differently in the old days than they are now and labelled the complaint as an act of treason. The whistleblower turned out to be a member of the C.I.A.
On Friday, Trump brought the country's annual cap on refugees allowed in the country from 30,000 to a historic low of just 18,000, adding to the Trump Administration's ban on asylum seekers who travel through another country to reach the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump also denied that the U.S. had offed to lift sanctions on Iran to clear the way for a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at the United Nations. Rouhani claimed that the U.S. had agreed to lift the sanctions. Developing reports Friday show that the Trump administration is considering limiting investments in China and delisting Chinese companies from the U.S. stock exchange.
Congress plans to hold hearings into the impeachment inquiry as early as this week.
