Airbnb has been testing out this type of technology in various parts of Australia ever since 2021, and in the United States, a select amount of guests were permitted on Airbnb premises since 2020.
Airbnb banned house parties following several incidents including a fatal shooting at a Halloween party in 2019. Further Airbnb restrictions became prevalent in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world.
There are several characteristics that the Airbnb will pay close attention to when it comes to pinpointing potentially risky situations on its premises. Attributes such as overly positive testimonials about the company, or lack thereof, length of guests' stays at the Airbnb, trip length, and so on are taken into account when attempting to identify problematic situations that could possibly turn into risky parties.
"The primary objective is attempting to reduce the ability of bad actors to throw unauthorized parties which negatively impact our Hosts, neighbors, and the communities we serve," the company stated on its website.
Airbnb has reported that ever since this anti-party technology has been implemented in Australia, it has been very impactful when it comes to putting a stop to the dangerous partying behaviors. Airbnb has observed an approximate 35% decrease in unauthorized parties since its inception in Australia.
In terms of consequences for hosting unauthorized parties on Airbnb premises, guests will be blocked from making certain types of reservations, but may still be permitted to make other types of bookings, such as private rooms instead of entire houses. Airbnb also reported account suspensions for approximately 6,600 guests who had infringed upon anti-party rules in the year 2021 alone.
